Karen.org is one of the main sites where to find general information on the Karen. It has a very active message board, a cultural site where one can get information on history, clothing, music, stories and Karen holidays. There is also a chat room where every Friday one can chat with Karen and friends of the Karen, and a site where news are downloaded. Karen.org has also organised a campaign for the flood victims of 2 September 2002 which you are invited to join.

The Karen Human Rights Group is a small and independent group documenting the human rights situation of ordinary people in rural Burma. The group was first formed in December 1992 to help villagers in rural Burma to get their story to the outside world by translating their stories and testimonies into reports for worldwide distribution, accompanied by supporting photos and documentary evidence of the human rights situation. All its reports are downloaded on the net. It also has a set of photos and maps, as well as comprehensive background information on Burma. Three of its reports and the background information on Burma have been published as a book, available from Amazon and all other book shops. The site also has links to Ethnic Nationality Sites, Burma Interest Sites, Overseas Interest Groups, and International Organisations.

The Karen National Union has a site with short information of itself, an introduction to Karen history and culture, news updates and press releases, and news highlights including mostly Thai newspapers clippings and much more information about youth issues, narcotics, women issues from the perspective of the KNU. The site also has maps of Eastern Burma, and a few songs. The Karen National League, as a non-armed Karen organization, seeks to uplift the lot of the Karen people and bring about the rule of law and true democracy to Burma. It engages in any and all lawful activities incidental to the foregoing purposes. Its site has a short section on press releases, policy papers, and documents.  It also has links to National Ethnic Organizations, Burmese Organizations, International Community, Media Groups, Newspapers & Journals.

The Karen Emergency Relief Fund exists for the sole purpose of helping a group of people in need -- the Karen people of Burma. If you substitute "Karens" for "Kosovars" or "East Timorese" in any news article you will know exactly what is happening to this ethnic minority group of Burma Information: specialist in webdesign enterprise Eindhoven, Holland . Please read on, and you will see the parallels. There are short information on the purpose of the Karen Emergency Relief Fund, on the situation of the Karen and on ways to help them.

The Karen Teacher Working Group has 18 full time staff traveling throughout Karen State who are responsible for teacher training and surveying schools. Using the most up to date information from Karen State, KTWG regularly publishes reports of Karen State education . Through ongoing dialogue with local teachers and communities, they have developed (or are developing) the following activities: mobile teacher training program, the teacher newsletter, and the Kawthoolei education fund. The following two projects are ones which KTWG will continue to run as we have in the past: training manual development and training of trainers.

The Burma Volunteer Programme provides educational opportunities to mixed ethnic nationality students from Burma who are presently living in Thailand. It is looking for a number of individuals who can teach English and work on issues related to human rights, women’s welfare, etc. Click here for information.

The International Assistance Group focuses on the thousands of refugees from Burma forced to live under life threatening conditions in over-crowded refugee camps along the Thailand/Burma border in Thailand. IAG has several Areas of Outreach: Medical Outreach, hildren's Outreach, Student's Outreach, Women's Outreach, Family Outreach. You can sponsor a child, sponsor an Internally Displaced Students currently housed at the IDP Hostel, or be a pen pal with a Karen Refugee, among others.

The Burmese Refugee Care Project and Dr. Cynthia Maung provide medical care for refugees and trains medics along the war torn Thai-Burmese border. The BRCP helps to fund the purchase of backpacks filled with medical supplies and medicines that the medics carry to treat the people who are sick and sometimes dying. You can help Dr. Cynthia and the Burmese refugees by providing donations or your time. All money goes directly to Dr. Cynthia's clinic and the Burmese refugees. $50 will fill a medic’s backpack with medicines and supplies for 3 months. $100 will purchase a new backpack for a medic with blood pressure cuff, surgical equipment, reference books and medicine.See also volunteer information for medical professionals, the medical supplies wish list, and the medicine wish list.

The Karen Hilltribes Trust is working with the Karen people of north west Thailand to help them develop their own social, educational and economic infrastructure. It provides opportunities for people aged 18 and over to carry out long-term voluntary work among the Karen. Among the projects are the installation and maintenance of clean water systems for the villages.

The Australia Karen Youth Group is primarily a social justice organisation which advocates human rights, self empowerment and self determination of the Karen and other ethnic groups within a democratic Burma. Its main focus is on grass roots education projects for Karen youth. The AKYP works alongside the Karen community in Australia and local NGOs on the Thai Burma border. AKYP also has a strong focus on raising awareness about the situation in Burma, on networking with other organisations and on working alongside other ethnic groups from Burma.

The Karen Women's Organization is one of the 12 groups in the Women's League for Burma -- a central umbrella group formed primarily to give coherence to a number of very small projects and to make it easier for international donors to direct aid.

Dr. Michael R. Lemings, a professor of Sociology and Anthropology at St. Olaf College, has made and is selling a very good movie on the Karen: The Karen of Tee Mae Ker Lah: Rabbits in the Mouth of the Crocodile.

The Jubilee Campaign has completed an interim report on the genocide against the Karen people in Burma (March 1998).

The American Karen Agency is an organization based in Bakersfield, California, USA. It is an association of Karen in the US who seek to keep alive the Karen culture among the Karen living in the US.

ORGANISATIONS WORKING FOR DEMOCRATISATION IN BURMA

The Burmese Youth Project, also known as The Bamboo Youth Project, is about providing opportunity to Burmese refugees, rather than aid.
