Karen.org has organised a
campaign for the victims of the flood of 2 September 2002
The Karen
Emergency Relief Fund is looking for food, medicine, shelter,
clothing, scholarships for promising Karen students, and funds to conduct
therapy for the victims of rape and torture.
The Kawthoolei
Education Fund supports over 31,000 students, and over
1300 teachers in Karen State (Kawthoolei). It welcomes all sizes
of donations. US$100 can provide 1000 pencils or a teacher's subsidy for 1
year or 400 notebooks or basic health support for 30 students or construct
one classroom to support a number of other education needs. Donations will be
matched with individual schools and distributed in whole.
The Burma
Volunteer Programme provides educational opportunities to
mixed ethnic nationality students from Burma who are presently living in
Thailand. It is looking for a number of individuals who can teach English and
work on issues related to human rights, women’s welfare, etc.
The International Assistance Group focuses on the
thousands of refugees from Burma forced to live under life threatening
conditions in over-crowded refugee camps along the Thailand/Burma border in
Thailand. You can sponsor a child, sponsor an Internally
Displaced Student currently housed at the IDP Hostel, or be a pen pal with a Karen Refugee,
among others.
The Burmese Refugee
Care Project and Dr. Cynthia Maung provide medical care
for refugees and trains medics along the war torn Thai-Burmese border. You
can help Dr. Cynthia and the
Burmese refugees by providing donations or your time. All money goes directly
to Dr. Cynthia's clinic and the Burmese refugees. $50 will fill a medic’s
backpack with
medicines and supplies for 3 months. $100 will purchase a new backpack for a
medic with blood pressure cuff, surgical equipment, reference books and
medicine. See also volunteer information for medical
professionals, the medical supplies wish list, and the medicine
wish list.
The Karen
Hilltribes Trust is working with the Karen people of north
west Thailand to help them develop their own social, educational and economic
infrastructure. It provides opportunities for people aged 18 and over to
carry out long-term voluntary work among the Karen. Among the projects are
the installation and maintenance of clean water systems for the villages.
